Let it Snow!
Jan 20, 2019
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ!
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! I remember when I was first ordained, I couldn't understand why pastors would take their vacation in January and February. I loved the snow, the clean look of earth, the chance to ski, to have fun in the snow. I think it took me about 15 years to see that it was appropriate and a good thing to go south.
In the Book of Daniel (3:57-88), the author blesses the Lord for all creation beginning with the universe and stars, to weather, the land and sea, to Israel, the chosen people and, finally, God Himself. In other words everything is asked to bless the Lord. What prevents us from praising God for all that we receive? What makes us sourpusses? Naysayers?
In AA they have a saying called HALT. It stands for Hunger, Anger, Loneliness and Tiredness. These physical qualities get us into trouble. When my great niece got married, they told her future husband, when she is crabby, feed her. He said, I already know that. She acknowledged it as well, she knew it. How often do we say and do things when we are tired and regret it after?
How often do our angry words of self defense wound someone we love and care about? How often do some get into relationships that are deadly, because they are lonely and anything seems better than being lonely?
If we pay attention to our signals from our bodies, we can save a lot of harm. When tired, get a nap, when angry, take a walk, when lonely visit a friend, when hungry, eat ice cream. There, all is resolved. We praise you, Lord, and thank you for you have made all things wonderful. Let It snow, let it snow, let it snow.
