We have been notified that there is an email scam circulating at other diocese around the country. The scam involves requesting iPhone/iTunes gift cards, all of which is communicated through the fictitious email accounts. The fictitious emails are Spoofing the Pastor’s email address and targeting employees, but may also target parishioners.
We have seen limited instances of this in the Diocese of Toledo, but wanted to make you aware, should it arrive here. Please share this information with your parish staff.
In this age when personal data can be misused by scam artists, please use extra caution before sharing your personal information. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo, clergy, and entities such as parishes and schools do not regularly solicit your personal or business information by any method unless initiated by you. Should you receive an unsolicited request for such information, exercise extreme caution. Contact the entity that requested your information by using official contact information only to verify the legitimacy of the request. Do not use contact information provided in the potentially fraudulent request.
